17th December - O Wisdom
Today we begin the beautiful "O Antiphons", which call on the Lord under various titles and express our desire for His Coming.Today's antiphon addresses the Lord as Wisdom:
O Wisdom, you come forth from the mouth of the Most High.
You fill the universe and hold all things together in a strong yet gentle manner.
O come to teach us the way of truth.
Wisdom is not just 'head knowledge', it involves the ability to recognise the right thing to do and also to do it. This is why the antiphon goes on to ask Christ that He in His coming as Wisdom would teach us the way of truth. To teach us not only what is right and true and good, but also grant us the ability to do the good and follow the way of truth.
Another aspect of this antiphon is that it recognises Christ as the one who created all things and "holds all things in being." The created world, other people and even our own bodies are not ours to do with as we please. We have been created by God according to his plan and we should try to live in a way that is open to God's plan and help others to do the same.
