Pumpkin Lanterns and Holiness

Our 'kitchen sister' carved a very nice pumpkin head and, as you can see from the photos below, we had a lot of fun with it. But because today (November 1st) is the Feast of All Saints, I was also thinking about what Vatican II speaks of as, "the universal call to holiness". This feast is a reminder that we are all destined to become Saints, to share in the divine life of the Trinity.

And I drew a lesson on how we become holy from watching my sister carve out that pumpkin. The more of the insides that she managed to remove the better the lantern looked, with the face showing up clearly and the light shining out from the inside. And that is what we have to let God do to become holy. When I am full of myself there is no space in me for Christ to dwell and His light to shine out. But when I create space in my life for God, and allow Him to dig out of me all the stuff that crowds Him out (self-centerness & busyness & sinfulness) then there is space for His light in me. And then the light of His grace will shine out of my life for others so that I will truly be, as He told us to be, "the light of the world" (Mt 5:14).
