The story behind our new Birthday Card

The story behind our new Birthday Card.
One of our dear Sisters hails from the west of Ireland, not too far from Ballinasloe, Co. Gslway, and until she entered our monastery, lived a life of almost Franciscan love for the beauty of all that surrounded her on the family farm. The wonder of creation and of how very near us the Lord is, made her heart sing then, and it is still singing after all these years. The melody is Dominican now, though! Deo Gratias.
When we moved from the Chord Road out to the Twenties, she received a cutting, (or whatever you call it) of one of the chestnut trees from her home-place, and from it has grown the tree we have photographed for our new ‘Birthday card.’ To stroll around the garden, at a nice ‘contemplative’ pace, is good for the soul, indeed; and as the years pass, it is unfailingly fascinating to see how the various trees and flowers and plants flourish; and there is nothing to compare with the song of the birds who seem to be in competition with each other as to which of them can out-sing the other!
When the chestnut tree is in full bloom, the flowers on it stand very tall, and two of our Sisters who regularly walk around together, got to talking about it and admiring it. Said one to the other, ‘they almost look like candles’ and that was the inspiration for using the tree as an image on a birthday card. It is not so easy for nuns to know what kind of images would suit men, flowers aren’t always quite ‘the thing’ and so, the tree is our offering, although it should be appropriate for anyone, and the ‘birthday prayer’ inside is certainly true for everyone. We hope you like it!
And know that while we would not pray that recipients of the card should live to celebrate as many birthdays as there are ‘candles’ on the tree, we do pray that any and everyone who receives the card, is held in our prayer, that the Lord may grant them the graces of health and length of life; and believe in His immense love for and delight in them.
