The Pearl of Great Price - Novena to St Dominic Day 1
Today is the first day of our Novena to St Dominic, and I have tried to base my reflection on the Mass readings for today, which actually fit quite well. The Gospel for today (Mt 13:44-46) speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven as a “hidden treasure” or “pearl of great price”. The one who finds it “goes off happy” and “sells everything he owns and buys it.” Dominic was a man who was deeply aware that the Kingdom of Heaven was a priceless treasure, and this filled his life with joy. A joy that many others commented on, a joy that seems to have spilled out from him to others like the radiance on Moses face in the First Reading. It was a radiance and joy from being with God in His Kingdom.
I also think that his sorrow and great concern to save sinners was because he was so acutely aware of the priceless treasure they were depriving themselves of. His preaching flowed from his experience of this “pearl of great price”, which helped make it fruitful in the conversion of others.
I pray that all of us Dominicans may have that same flame, that experience of the Kingdom of Heaven as a priceless treasure, so that many others may come to know and experience that treasure through our lives and preaching.
